Students from area high schools recently got a first-hand look at creative arts opportunities available to them at Carl Sandburg College.

Sandburg hosted its inaugural Fine Arts Day on Nov. 8, where students from Monmouth-Roseville, Spoon River and West Central high schools had the opportunity to explore Sandburg’s fine arts programs and facilities.

“The arts are strong here,” James Hutchings, associate director of humanities and fine arts, said. “We have really strong curricular offerings, we have dynamite faculty and we want people to know that they can take what they’ve done in high school, follow their interests and really engage with the arts, whether it’s visual or theatrical or musical. We have all of those things here.”

Students were treated to a performance of Sandburg Theater’s production of its fall play, “Noises Off,” under the direction of theater instructor Robert Thompson, and they could tour and use the College’s art studios. Attendees also were able to view George Olson’s show “The Seasonal Prairie,” currently on display in the Lonnie Eugene Stewart Art Gallery, curated by art program coordinator Lisa Walker. A group of students from Monmouth-Roseville then took part in a creative writing workshop led by English instructor Sharon Trotter-Martin.

“That’s a fun complement that we don’t always think about being as part of the arts,” Hutchings said of the writing workshop.

In addition to Associate in Arts and Associate in Fine Arts degree offerings, Sandburg’s Humanities and Fine Arts Department has talent scholarships available to students in the areas of art, creative writing, music and theater. Talent scholarships may waive tuition for up to 18 credit hours per semester and can be applied for HERE.
